Match reports:
Northampton Casuals 0 v Stags 5

It was universally acknowledged that this was a poor game which reflected little credit on its participants and was barely worthy of a match at level 7.
Such positives as Stags could take from this affair were largely statistical: the first clean sheet sheet and third double of the season and two points that keep them in fifth place in the table.

Stags had the strong wind in their favour inthe first half yet started the match as though they had only just got out of bed and were fortunate on three minutes when the bounce of the ball in Stags in goal eluded Casuals grasp. In truth, though, this was probably the closest Casuals got to scoring throughout the game as Stags coped pretty comfortably with their one dimensional pick and drive game.

The problem for Stags was that  they could not lift themselves out of the general stodgy mess- despite the wide pitch and dry ball, ideal for an up tempo game. Ball retention, passing and handling were all poor and though there were a number of moments of individual enterprise and skill the support was rarely there which, togetherb with the home sidesusually illegalactivities at the breakdown, meant that quick ball was rarely produced.
Half time at 0-0 was a true reflection of a dire 40 minutes though casuals must surely have been the happier, the elements now in their favour. In fact, Stags now took the game to the hosts nd when awarded a kickable penalty, opted for  the quick dart Casuals infringed again and their flanker was sin binned. From the resulting penalty Stags finally put a few passes together enabling dale Abblitt to go over wide out for 5-0.
On th ehour, Casuals having lost their hooker and a prop, scrums went uncontested, thus rendering the proceedings even more sterile. at about the same time Tom McCreadie received a yellow and an anxious 10 minutes seemed in prospect. In fact Casuals had neither the pace or the guile to trouble a Stags defence that did its job all afternoon. Stags played all their substitutes and played out the final minutes largely in midfield.

Stags now have 2 free weeks before meeting Leicester Forest at Hinchingbrooke on 29 March. Both sides have 23 points and having beaten Forest on the opening day of the season with a fine collective effort, Stags will be lookingfor their fourth double against them.
