After Bury St Edmunds cried off a strong Stags side visited Olney 2's who play in the league above, expecting a tough game. They were not disappointed and only resolute tackling in the first 15 minutes stopped an Olney side hell bent on recycling quick ball and running everything . Once Stags caught their breath they set about dominating the set piece, Pinkney was in commanding form at the lineout and the front five started putting pressure on the Olney pack. Stags did move the ball wide, but handling errors gave the Olney backs chance to counter attack. Quick to redeem for their mistakes the cover tackling from the Stags backs was exceptional, highlighted by a last ditch try saving tackle by Chip Wood and Wayne Bradley on the Stags try line. After 38 minutes the score was 0-0. Huntingdon had a line out on the Olney 22, a catch and drive took the play forward 15 yards, hooker Stimmo held his position on the touch line, the defence were drawn in Wilcox fed Stimmo who with a deft side step crossed for the score. A penalty early in the 2nd half by Bradley put Stags 8-0 ahead. As the Olney pack tired Stags were on the front foot, 17 old tearway flanker Jack Heather was now winning all the ball on the ground ably supported by old war horse Spencer Burgess, Alex Whitesall and Andrew Coombes when he came on. Heather himself scored from 20 yards out after sustained pressure in the midfield, converted by Bradley. At 15-0 Stags relaxed momentarily and Olney capatalised scoring a good try after several phases of play. It was testament to Stags attitude that they upped the effort, strong midfield defence reduced Olneys attacking options; again good ball secured by Heather created an attacking ruck, winger Andy Walker ran a good line close to the base bouncing off a despairing tackle to score under the posts. Olney refused to role over there spirited performance was highlighted by their Captain (The only man older than Spenny on the pitch) being sin binned with Stags prop Atwell after he perhaps injudiciously started a brawl.
This was Stags best performance of the season and toughest test.
