In an enjoyable and well contested match a mixed Stags side overcame old friends and rivals from St Neots to win by a goal, two tries and two penalties to a penalty.
St Neots put Stags under sustained pressure for the first ten minutes which were played entirely in the Stags 22. Stout defence saw off waves of St Neots attacks until, entirely against the balance of play Stags took the lead with a Matt Durrant penalty.
Stags started to put pace into their game and were now quicker to the loose ball; sharp handling resulted in a Rob Grant try soon followed by a solo effort by Matt Durrrant involving a kick ahead and collect which left the home defence flat footed. Stags backs looked dangerous but the only furtherscore in the first half was a Durrant penalty. 18-0 to Stags at half time.
Both teams now made a number of changes and the weather deteriorated, the rest of the match being played in heavy rain. St Neots pulled back 3 points with a penalty but Stags had a final try left in them scored by Warwick Blamey after good following up from a kick to the corner.
St Neots ended as they had begun, camped on the Stags line but, confronted by solid tackling, were unable to force their way over.
Fielding only a handful of first team players, this was an encouraging display by Stags who will seek to maintain this sort of form throughout the club. Three sides are in action on 6 January, all against Ampthill, the 2nd XV being at home.
